The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), on Friday, June 12, 2026, undertook an exercise to remove structures erected on waterways within the Tema Timber Market area as part of measures to restore drainage channels and reduce flooding risks in the metropolis.
The exercise, which forms part of TMA’s commitment to improving environmental sanitation and promoting climate-resilient urban development, targeted structures and activities obstructing the free flow of stormwater.
Officials from the Assembly and NADMO explained that encroachment on waterways has been a major contributor to flooding, especially during heavy rainfall, as it affects the natural drainage system.
The operation was carried out with the involvement of relevant departments of the Assembly, with authorities urging traders, residents and developers to respect planning regulations and desist from putting up structures on drainage reserves.
The Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to creating a cleaner, safer and more sustainable Tema, noting that protecting waterways is critical to safeguarding lives and properties.
He appealed to stakeholders and residents to support the Assembly’s efforts by keeping drains clear and cooperating with measures aimed at improving sanitation and flood management.
The TMA stated that similar exercises would continue across the metropolis as part of efforts to enforce proper spatial planning and build a resilient city.
