The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has launched a week-long awareness campaign to regulate the siting of temporary structures, including kiosks, containers, and wooden sheds, within the metropolis.
The initiative, dubbed “The Reset Journey Begins,” forms part of efforts to restore Tema’s status as Ghana’s first planned city by addressing the growing challenge of unauthorized structures.
The campaign seeks to educate residents and business owners on where temporary structures cannot be placed, especially within designated safety and security zones such as:
School perimeters
Hospital zones
Utility corridors
Government premises
As part of the exercise, the Assembly will also sensitize the public on what qualifies as an unauthorized structure, the process for regularizing existing structures, and the penalties applicable to offenders.
According to the TMA, immediate removal awaits structures located within security zones, while zero tolerance will be applied to new structures erected after July 21. However, there remains a regularization window for those established before that date.
Speaking at a meeting with all Assembly Members on Friday, the Mayor of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to restoring order and discipline across the city.
> “Tema was built with vision and precision — a model city not only for Ghana but for Africa. The Reset Journey is not about punishment; it’s about progress. We are renewing the spirit of order, safety, and pride that once defined our metropolis. Together, we will make Tema shine again,” she said
Hon. Bright noted that while enforcement was necessary, the exercise was not intended to destroy livelihoods but rather to protect the city’s long-term future. She emphasized that restoring Tema’s layout and ensuring compliance with planning regulations was central to the Assembly’s development
The Mayor further called on residents, business owners, and community leaders to cooperate fully with the TMA and support the campaign.
She said the exercise was a collective journey of restoration, urging citizens to see it as an opportunity to rebuild a cleaner, safer, and more organized city for current and future generations.
> “Every great city goes through a renewal phase — this is ours. The Reset Journey is about reclaiming our heritage and building a city that works for everyone,” she added.
The TMA has encouraged the public to familiarize themselves with the city’s bye-laws and take steps to regularize their structures to avoid sanctions.
