The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Honorable Titus Nii Kwartei Glover together with the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) embarked on a massive two – days clean up exercise to rid the city of filth and weeds which have grown at undeserving locations in some selected areas within the metropolis. This two -days initiative was held on Thursday 26th and Friday 27th September, 2024. The exercise was spanned across five selected electoral areas. The exercise commenced at 6: 00 am – 12:00 noon each day with its kickoff point at the forecourt of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly. This two – days initiative was spearheaded by the Greater Accra Regional Minister and it was to promote environmental sustainability and foster community engagement.
The team of high-level delegation who led the clean-up exercise comprised of the Greater Accra Regional Minister Honorable Titus Nii Kwartei Glover, Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) Yohane Amarh Ashitey, the Metro Coordinating Director Mr. John Owu, Environmental Health Unit, Waste management Department, Heads of Departments, Assembly members, Zoomlion volunteers and members of the community. It kicked off at the forecourt of the Assembly at exactly 6: 00 am, all beautifully clad in their vibrant orange and green vests or reflectors. They were equipped with brooms, wheelbarrows, gloves, spade, shovels, pick axes, Wellington boots and rakes. The waste management department was readily available to facilitate the exercise. The officers of the Tema Information Services Department sensitized the community ahead of time, informing the citizenry on the upcoming clean up exercise and the need for them to involve themselves to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
The selected areas where the clean -up exercise centered was on mainly electoral areas within Tema East (Community One and Tema New Town respectively). The security services in Tema with the notable mention of the Military, Ghana National Fire Service and the Police service also took part and ensured an incident free exercise. Residents and shops which fell between these designated clean up areas were entreated not to open their shops until the exercise was over.
In Tema Community One, the electoral areas of Kwasi Plange which comprises of the market and surrounding areas and Padmore where the sports stadium is located received a massive clean-up with the whole community coming out in their numbers to aid the work.
In Tema New Town, the electoral areas of Oklor Kofi, Sea light and the Fishing Harbour electoral areas were not left out. The Assembly members encouraged their respective communities to indulge in the exercise as filth is one of the leading causes of various illnesses that has plagued them over the years. The waste management refuse trucks were available for the collection of the debris. The Mayor of Tema, Hon. Yohane Nii Amarh Ashitey, expressed his gratitude to the community and all participants for their immense support and cooperation, for making Tema shine and promoting a healthier environment. He pleaded with the community to keep Tema clean by not throwing rubbish indiscriminately. below are some pictorial evidences of the cleanup exercise.
