The week-long Homowo Festival in Tema Newtown climaxed on Sunday 17th August 2025 with a colorful durbar of chiefs and people, bringing together all 24 clans of Tema. The event was graced by the Mayor of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, in the company of the MCE for Tema West, the MP for Tema East, and traditional leaders of the Ga-Dangme community.
Addressing the durbar, Hon. Ebi Bright described the Homowo celebration as not only a cultural festival but also a call to action for a brighter future. She urged residents to reimagine Tema as a “dream city” built on shared responsibility, resilience, and pride.
> “We must make Tema a dream city,” she said. “This is the time for our generation to build a new and beautiful Tema. A city free from drug addiction and prostitution, rooted in strong cultural values, and safe for every family. The task before us is to repair the values that hold our communities together and to create a future where our children can thrive.”
Highlighting her administration’s initiatives, Mayor Ebi Bright announced the installation of 3,000 new streetlights across the metropolis to improve safety and night-time security. She further stressed the importance of education, reminding parents and leaders that learning begins at home and must be strengthened with opportunities that make young people employable and competitive.
In a historic gesture, Hon. Ebi Bright launched the Homowo Fund with a seed capital of GH¢50,000. The fund, to be managed by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), received immediate support from the traditional authorities and all 24 clans, drawing resounding applause from the gathering. The fund is expected to promote cultural activities, community development, and youth empowerment.
The Mayor also welcomed the support of traditional leaders and community task forces to maintain cleanliness in the city, pledging the Assembly’s full backing for initiatives that keep Tema safe and healthy.
The durbar concluded with widespread optimism, as chiefs, residents, and leaders embraced the Mayor’s call for unity, cultural renewal, and a shared vision to transform Tema into the “dream city” of Ghana.
