TEMA -18 March 2006.
The Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, has highlighted the role of market women in Ghana’s informal economy, describing them as examples of resilience and economic strength during an event marking the climax of International Women’s Day.
Speaking at Olam Senior High School, she said small-scale traders, particularly market women, contribute significantly to the economy but are often not fully recognized in traditional economic measurements such as GDP.
The event formed part of a month-long International Women’s Day celebration organized by the Social Welfare Department of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations.
She also encouraged women to be confident and take up opportunities even in spaces where they may be underrepresented, urging them to be bold and participate in leadership and decision-making.
The programme ended with the distribution of sanitary pads to female students, as part of efforts to promote menstrual hygiene and support young women’s education.
