It was all joy Friday morning 27th January 2023, when the Mayor of Tema, Hon. Yohane Amarh Ashitey hosted Hon. Yusuf Mustapha, Minister of Youth and Sports at a colourful ceremony to formally commission the first ever Cruyff Court (Ultra modern soccer pitch) to be constructed in Sub Saharan Africa, outside South Africa.
This enviable feat was achieved through Mayor Ashitey’s deliberate effort at wooing Corporate Institutions in Tema to support the vision to “make Tema Shine again”.
The drive to construct the facility was championed by the Mayor and actively facilitated by Cargill Ghana Ltd under the auspices of Johan Cruyff Foundation.
Present at the ceremony were the Aedo Van der Weij, MD of Cargill Ghana Ltd and Neils Meijer of the Cruyff Foundation in The Netherlands.
The Tema Meridian Cruyff Court is a specialised mini soccer pitch with ancillary facilities like changing rooms and offices. It provides a perfect ambiance for professionals to unearth soccer talents. It is therefore the Mayor’s vision that this facility will serve the Oninku Cluster of Schools as well as the adjoining Community.
Officials from the Cruyff Foundation were in the Country to train sixteen (16) local Coaches ahead of today’s ceremony. The Coaches were selected from the Community and the beneficiary schools. [27TH JANUARY 2023]
