The Community Adolescent Health Club in collaboration with Ghana Health Service and supported by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has held a health screening exercise in Tema community 1.<\/p>\n
The exercise, the club\u2019s first public outreach program saw a turnout of about 400 adolescent girls and boys and 150 elderly people.<\/p>\n
The exercise started with a general clean up exercise after which HIV tests, breast examinations for breast cancer, screening for TB and individual problem based counseling were conducted amidst education on sanitation, dieting, teenage pregnancy, menstrual hygiene, STI, sex and drug abuse.<\/p>\n
Grace Eddy Amewu, Adolescent Health Focal Person at the Health Directorate who led the health team said the exercise was a success and a commendable move to salvage adolescents from unhealthy practices.<\/p>\n
The Assembly Member for Kwesi Plange electoral area and board member of the Community Adolescent Club, Mr. Alhassan Issah told TMA media that, in 2017, Tema East had the highest record on HIV within the Metropolis, also alarming is how the youth are getting involved in drug peddling, therefore the need to step up educational programs for quick solutions. \u201cWe have started from site 2 and 20, and it would not end there, we shall be going to other sites as well. It is important to know your health status so that you can manage it to live longer,,,,, our children must also understand that enjoyment is not about sex and sex is not a game, it can land you into serious trouble\u201d he recounted.<\/p>\n
The community adolescent club was founded 2015 by some youths in the community with the aim of supporting and sensitizing one another on health related as well as general life subjects. However, the club faces some challenges like inactiveness of members, lack of donors or sponsorship among others which is hindering the progress of the club. It is open to anyone who is interested in the motives of the club.<\/p>\n
