The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), in collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and other corporate bodies, has launched the “Eco in Motion” campaign, a GNPC & Partners initiative to green and clean the metropolis.
The programme began with a symbolic exercise to clean the backyards of participating institutions, signaling the start of a broader plan to restore Tema’s environment.
Speaking at the launch, Eunice Akosua Ofori, Principal Officer, Corporate Affairs at GNPC, said the campaign is designed as a long-term project and not a one-off event.
> “We are starting from our own backyard. This is just the beginning. The vision is to extend the exercise beyond the Meridian Enclave to cover the entire metropolis,” she said.
Ms. Ofori explained that the campaign is aligned with the Mayor of Tema’s vision to reset the city into a cleaner, greener and more sustainable industrial hub.
> “We recognize that this is a huge task. It involves not just clearing rubbish but securing the environment so that we do not have to keep coming back to clean. That is why we are involving other businesses and institutions to make it sustainable,” she added.
The programme will gradually be rolled out to communities such as Bankuman and the coastal areas, with activities expected to combine sanitation with recreational events to promote community ownership.
The Mayor of Tema, Hon. Ebi Bright, welcomed the initiative, noting that it fits squarely into her agenda of resetting Tema to its original plan as a modern and well-structured city.

The “Eco in Motion” drive is expected to run throughout the year, with its scale dependent on resources and support from partner organisations.
> “Our aim is not simply to clean today and come back tomorrow to start again,” Ms. Ofori emphasized. “It is to create a clean and green Tema that generations will be proud of.”
