A five-day high-level engagement between Tema Metropolitan Assembly and the Aarhus SSC Team has strengthened Tema’s push toward climate resilience under the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) partnership.

The April 2026 visit, undertaken in partnership with Aarhus and supported by the Government of Denmark, combined intensive capacity-building sessions with field inspections and technical planning, all aimed at addressing flooding, drainage inefficiencies and urban heat challenges in Tema.

The Aarhus delegation was led by Anne Laustsen, while the Tema-side coordination was spearheaded by Frank Asante, working under the leadership of the Mayor, Ebi Bright, whose passion and commitment to the cooperation continue to drive the partnership forward.

Throughout the engagement, engineers, planners and environmental officers were taken through practical approaches to climate adaptation, including flood mapping, nature-based solutions and climate-responsive urban design. The sessions focused on translating global best practices into local solutions tailored to Tema’s fast-growing urban environment.

Deliberations were anchored on ongoing pilot interventions along the General Hospital Road and the Hospital Link Road, where participants assessed existing challenges and explored integrated solutions to improve stormwater management and road functionality.

A key highlight of the visit was the tariff track session, which focused on sewer management and the critical role of revenue mobilisation in sustaining sanitation systems. The session examined practical strategies to improve cost recovery, enhance billing systems, and ensure efficient operation and maintenance of sewer infrastructure across Tema. It also highlighted the need for stronger institutional coordination and public compliance to support long-term sanitation financing.

The programme further advanced into joint planning sessions, where both teams co-developed strategies such as permeable pavements, improved drainage channels, and the integration of green corridors into urban spaces.

The visit concluded with a roadmap for implementation as the SSC programme transitions from Phase Two to Phase Three, with emphasis on measurable outcomes, sustainability and strengthened institutional capacity.

The partners are expected to reconvene in June 2026 to assess progress and deepen collaboration.

The engagement marks a significant step in Tema’s efforts to build a resilient and sustainable city, with long-term benefits expected to include reduced flooding, improved infrastructure and enhanced quality of life for residents.

The Golden Age Youth Centre is set to receive a major facelift under the leadership of the Mayor, Ebi Bright, as part of a broader vision to modernize community facilities and expand opportunities for young people in Tema.

The transformation will see the Centre redeveloped into a modern, multi-purpose hub featuring training and workshop spaces, an ICT and innovation hub, an open community pavilion, recreational areas, and improved sanitation and utility facilities. Landscaped green areas and shaded outdoor seating will also create a more welcoming environment for youth and community activities.

Importantly, the project is being supported by Mercy Ships International, which intends to utilize the facility when they arrive in Ghana. During their mission, the Centre will serve as a support base for outreach activities, as Mercy Ships will undertake major surgeries free of charge for Ghanaians, bringing life-changing medical care to many in need.

Beyond infrastructure, the upgraded Youth Centre will serve as a hub for skills development, entrepreneurship, community programmes, and youth engagement, reinforcing its role as a vital space for empowerment and growth.

This initiative reflects a strong commitment to both community development and healthcare access, bringing renewed hope and positioning Tema as a key destination for impactful social interventions.
