Mayor Hon. Yohane Amarh Ashitey held a colorful ceremony to commission the first ever Cruyff Court in Sub Saharan Africa outside South Africa. This modern soccer pitch was built through Mayor Ashitey’s efforts to encourage corporate institutions in Tema to support the vision to “make Tema Shine again”. Cargill Ghana Ltd, under the auspices of Johan Cruyff Foundation, actively facilitated the drive to construct the facility. Aedo Van der Weij, MD of Cargill Ghana Ltd and Neils Meijer of the Cruyff Foundation in The Netherlands were present at the ceremony. The Tema Meridian Cruyff Court is a specialized mini soccer pitch with ancillary facilities like changing rooms and offices. It will serve the Oninku Cluster of Schools as well as the adjoining Community. Officials from the Cruyff Foundation trained sixteen (16) local Coaches ahead of the ceremony. The Coaches were selected from the Community and the beneficiary schools.

Mayor Yohane Amarh Ashitey is prioritizing the provision of sanitation infrastructure in educational institutions to make “Tema Shine again”. He visited four senior high schools in Tema Metropolis to commission completed projects that will enhance health and safety. The schools that benefitted from these facilities were Our Lady of Mercy SHS, Chemu SHS, Tema Technical Institute and Manhean Sec/Technical School. Hon. Joseph Korto, Hon. Dennis Amanor and Hon. Sylvester Yankey, Sub Metro Chairmen for Tema East and Tema Central respectively, accompanied him on the tour. Honorable Assembly members whose Electoral Areas hosted the SHSs were also present at the commissioning ceremony.
