The three- week ban spans 21st April to 12th May 2023. The annual ban is imposed as part of preparation for the celebration of the Homowo festival of the Chiefs and People of Tema Traditional Area. The period allows for the Traditional High Priest and the Elders of his Court solemnly to commune with the Ancestors.

It is a period of stock taking and prayers for blessing and prosperity for the Traditional Area and beyond.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Faith Based Organisations (Christian and Muslim), The Elders of Tema and also Security Personnel.

At the end of deliberations, the Council constituted a Special Task force under the auspices of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly to coordinate general enforcement to ensure an incident-free exercise.

The Vessel landed at the Tema Harbour at exactly 6:00am and the passengers disembarked to see the iconic Industrial City of Tema.

Officials from Tema Metropolitan Assembly (The City Council) and the Ghana Tourism Authority received the visitors at the premises of The Presbyterian Church on the Greenwich Meridian at Community One, where security arrangements and other protocols had been arranged to ensure the absolute comfort and security of our guests.

Shuttle buses took our guests to historical sites and places of interest within the City and its peripheral Districts.

It was all joy when the group reconvene at 17hrs GMT in preparation to continue their voyage to Takoradi, before leaving for South Africa. [25TH APRIL 2023]

The main prayer session that lasted for about 30mins, attracted hundreds of our Muslim brothers and sisters who thronged the Stadium to receive special benediction from his Emminence the Chief Imam.

Addressing the congregants on behalf of the Mayor of Tema, the Metropolitan Coordinating Director, Mr. Michael Owusu Amoako called on the Muslim Community to embrace the government’s initiative on Free SHS to educate their children in order to give them a better future. He thanked the leadership of the Muslim Community for supporting the Assembly’s development agenda to make Tema Shine again.

Tema Kpelejoo Awards is an innovatiion initiated by Mayor Ashitey in collaboration with theTema Traditional Council , to promote the Tema Kpelejoo festival. His objective is to firmly put Tema Kpelejoo on the tourism calendar of Ghana.

Tema is the closest human habitation to the centre of the world, hence Tema Kpelejoo is the biggest festival in the Centre of the World.

Mayor Ashitey hinted that Tema is in talks with her Sister City, The London Borough of Greenwich to enhance the Tema experience.

Present at the ceremony were Nii Adjetey Agbo the Ag. President of the Tema Traditional Council, Nii Amarh Somponu the Chief of Staff at the Traditional Council as well as Mr. Michael Owusu Amoako the Metropolitan Coordinating Director of Tema.

Mr. Frank Asante and Mr. Albert Kraku both indigenes of Tema moderated the event.

Mrs. Lola Ashitey spouse of the Mayor presented the special award to the most Consistent group “kaa… son ..kpo”. A presentation that brought the crowd to a frenzy . Your guess is as good as mine.

The Redemption Presby church in response to the Mayor’s clarion call for closer collaboration have set up an IT Laboratory for the Redemption Basic School.

Hon. Ashitey had earlier visited The Manhean Senior High Technical School and Acheampong Village storm Drains that require attention as well as the SOL Cement storm drains that also require the construction of a foot bridge to ease movement of pedestrian trekking that corridor.

In usual fashion, Mayor Ashitey interspersed his tour with brief stopovers where he had very personal interaction with members of the community.

Hon. Ashitey was accompanied on the tour by the Metropolitan Urban Roads Engineer and other Technical staff of the Assembly. [6TH April 2023]

The Mayor had earlier met the leadership of all participating groups to discuss issues bothering on the celebrations and how to make it successful.

At the short but colourful ceremony held at the Tema Mantse Palace, Hon. Ashitey reiterated the need for the Assembly to sustain the existing collaboration between the Festival Planning Committee and the TMA to make the Kpelejoo Festival a key event on the Local Tourism Calendar of the Metropolis.

The event which was expected to last for some three hours, went deep into the night as the euphoria amongst patrons, especially the youth could simply not be cut short.

Patrons were full of praise for the Mayor’s innovation, because for them, it will elevate the festival and firmly put Tema on the global stage as the preferred destination in the Centre of the World.

Kpelejoo festival is celebrated by the people of Tema Traditional Area. It bears similarity with the Brazilian Carnival, however Kpelejoo is laced with rich tradition where songs are composed either to extol the virtuous in society or to reprimand the sinful as the case may be.

At the launch, Hon. Ashitey hinted that participating Kpele Groups shall be closely monitored by the team of Judges, who will award marks and the best performing groups in categories such as best development oriented song, best behaved group and so on shall be rewarded at a State Dinner to be hosted by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly.
