The quest for a Presiding Member for the Tema Metropolitan Assembly still continues after a second attempt to elect one proved unsuccessful. The position became vacant after the then Presiding Member went with the newly created Tema West Municipal Assembly.
The Assembly Members reconvened on Wednesday June 6 2018 for a re-election after the first election held on 23rd May did not produce an outright winner was postponed. But unfortunately for the second time the election could not fetch the needed result.
None of the contestants has been able to pull two-thirds of the total votes cast as required by law, to secure the position. Of 32 votes cast, Hon. Joseph Korto polled 13, Madam Doreen Ayensu had 12 and surprisingly, Hon. Eric Kojo Twumasi who topped the first round pulled 7 votes this time.
The MCE of Tema Metropolitan Assembly Hon. Felix Nii Mensah Anang-La urged the members to expedite the election as the absence of a Presiding Member is hindering the progress of the Assembly.
According to the Mayor, in a closed door meeting with the contestants, they agreed that since Hon. Eric Kojo Twumasi had the least votes he should step aside so that the next race would be between Hon. Joseph Korto and Madam Doreen Ayensu.
Adding his voice, the Member of Parliament for Tema East, Hon Titus-Glover, who was once a member of the house about 20 years ago and has occupied the position of a Presiding Member before, advised the Assembly Members to never compromise mediocrity with competence.
The election, supervised by the electoral commission has been suspended to a later date yet to be communicated.
